RAR vs 7Z Format Comparison

Detailed comparison of RAR and 7z archive formats. Compression, price, features, open source.

Price: 7z Wins

7z is completely free and open source. RAR creation requires WinRAR, which is paid (with a nag screen trial). 7-Zip can extract RAR for free but cannot create it.

Compression: Comparable

Both RAR and 7z offer excellent compression. In most tests, 7z with LZMA2 matches or slightly exceeds RAR compression ratio. The difference is usually within 5%.

Open Source: 7z Wins

7z is open source (LGPL license). RAR is proprietary — the compression algorithm is a trade secret. Open source allows independent security audits.

Recovery: RAR Wins

RAR has a built-in recovery record feature that can repair damaged archives. 7z does not have this feature. If archive integrity over unreliable media is critical, RAR has an advantage.

Filename Encryption: Both Support

Both RAR5 and 7z support encrypting filenames, hiding the contents list without the password. Older RAR4 does not support this.

Verdict

For most users, 7z is the better choice: it's free, open source, offers excellent compression, and supports all needed features. RAR's only unique advantage is the recovery record. Choose 7z unless you specifically need RAR compatibility.
